THE CRYSTAL SHELTER
MIX USE - SPACE AND FUNCTION
Type: 4th-year academic project
Location: Carpathian Mountains Romania
Year: 2016
Within a context of extreme risk to environmental forces, it is important to design buildings that can withstand extreme weather, radical temperature shifts, and rugged terrain.
The shape of the alpine shelter is inspired by a precious stone - a stone finished by human and is it also an aerodynamic shape that stands out to the snow and wind. The design of the interior dictates modesty, totally subordinate to the function of the shelter providing accommodation for up to 12 mountaineers. Its position within the wilderness requires respect for natural resources, therefore must meet the ground in a light and firm manner to ensure the shelter is strongly anchored while having a minimal impact on the ground. In addition, the outer shell needed to be realised with a highly resistant material.
The eye
Oil on canvas
24x24cm
Year: 2021
"The eye" is one of my first oil paintings made as soul therapy during these pandemic times. I find the egg fascinating for the many things you can make with it and for the many shapes it can get. "The eye is the translation of the Romanian word "ochi" - that's what Romanians call a fried egg. Quite interesting I think. While I photograph the egg I capture my reflection in the yolk, as the reflection in a pupil.

The Local Authority of Lappeenranta launched an architecture competition in which they proposed the replacement of the existing buildings from the Sammonlahti school site, with a new multifunctional and extended building that includes early childhood education and care, basic education, a library, sports facilities and other educational and cultural activities for the Sammonlahti community.
The complex, inspired by the Pinwheel consists of 4 wings: a day-care centre, a comprehensive school, a library and a sports hall which are joined by a central space that is “The Core”. Finnish school is a fusion between nature, technology, comfort and versatility. The school’s courtyard is not only a playground but also an outdoor science lab.
The attention was focused on informal learning spaces that facilitate social interaction and all kinds of educational activities. A monumental staircase goes down from the library to the canteen that can also be used for events, having a scene that is connected with a music room. Classes are no longer aligned along a monotonous corridor that serves only as a transition space, and benefits from an open and interactive space, easily supervised by teachers. At the end of the hall, there are creative workshops and laboratories with a view of the natural landscape. The structure of the complex is made of Cross-Laminated Timber which is processed in Lappeenranta.
